Single resource availability and direct planning

Hello,

we're new to Project 2007 and just figuring out how to work with it. I've
played a bit with the leveling options and I like how they work, but I'm not
yet sure how to cope with this while having simultanous projects running for
a single resource.

What I would like is a Gantt chart view of all accumulated projects for a
single resource in which I can move tasks along the planning. I know I can
import multiple projects into one, but that would require me to keep track of
the projects a resource is working on, which can lead to errors. In the
Projects portal site, I can select a resource and view it's availability.
This is exactly the view I want (all tasks for a resource visibile, grouped
by tasks), but that's readonly unfortunately. I'm looking for the same kind
of view but one I can use to drag tasks forward or backward in time with
respect to the inter-project levelling of the tasks.

Does such a thing exist or is my approach all wrong?

Hello jsiegmund,

What you are describing is a resource pool where your resource(s)
are listed in a separate project plan. You can then create the
project files listing the tasks and then "share" the resources from
the project pool file.

By using resources from a pool file you can create a consolidated
project and view the resource's assignments across multiple
projects. In the consolidated project, you can also use resource
leveling to adjust the schedule of the task.

What I'm not clear on is are you using Project Server? You mention
the "Project Portal site" is that through Project Server? If so,
you should be building your team of resources using the enterprise
resources from PS.
I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi Julie,

you're correct; we're using Project Server. I don't really understand your
answer, at least I don't know how to find the things you describe in Project.
I am using the resources from the enterprise portal, so via the portal I
already have the view I want (resource availability) but that's not editable
unfortunately.

I'm looking for a Gantt view of all my tasks accross multiple projects in
which I can drag and drop tasks from the different projects to alter my
planning with respect to the autolevelling settings of all the projects. It
would be great if that Gantt view can also display multiple resources at once
(tasks grouped by resource), but that's not nescessary.

Kind regards,

Jasper

Since this something about Project Server, it's best that you re-ask on
the newsgroup where the Server people hang-out:
microsoft.public.project.server.

Hello Jasper,

Alas, I know very little about Project server, so Rod's suggestion
to post to the server newsgroup is a good one. When you post,
please state explicitly in your post that you are using Project 2007
as I believe that does truly matter when using server.
