running office project 2003 professional. just try ing to learn how this
monster works.

after entereing and arranging a few tasks, clicked on "Identify risks to the
project". Now it wants me to enter the URL of the Project Server. what
Project Server? we don't need no Project Server.

how do i turn this off? how do i convince this beast that i am a single-user?

Select View/Gantt Chart and the request for Project Server information should
disappear to the background.

Since you are not using your stand alone in conjunction with Project Server,
you should stay away from the Collaborate menu.

i can make it disappear just fine by clicking the associated close button.

Collaborate menu? this problem came up when i clicked on Tasks, Identify
rissks to the project from the Project Guide toolbar.

(encountered the same problem a couple of other times but now can't remember
which button caused the problem)

but...i still have the problem. i still cannot use some of the functionality
because it keeps asking for a Project Server. where do i set the option that
tells this behemoth that i am a single-user?

all of the search results, online help, etc, etc is about how to work WITH
the Project Server, none of it has been about how to work WITHOUT a Project
Server

Hi engrkurt,

I'm not sure that you can. The Standard version is for use without a server
and the Pro version is for use with a server. As this newsgroup is for the
Standard version , you might like to try posting on the server newsgroup.
Please see FAQ Item: 24. Project Newsgroups. FAQs, companion products and
other useful Project information can be seen at this web address:

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

according to Microsoft's web site,
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/project/HA101747981033.aspx

"Office Project Professional 2007 includes all the capabilities in Microsoft
Office Project Standard 2007. Office Project Professional 2007 can be run
either as a single-user solution or connected to Microsoft Office Project
Server 2007, which then enables it to deliver enterprise project management
capabilities."

i am assuming Project 2003 has the same ability. seems like this ought to
be a really basic question, sorry for your trouble. since Project
Professional came with my MSDN Premium i'll just remove it and replace it
withl Standard.

Functionally, on a single user PC, they are both the same. It would appear,
though, that Project Pro doesn't believe you're on your own. Still, using
Standard is what I'd do too, Good luck,

In my version of Project, in the left side (Project Guide), there is a
section to identify project risks. If I select the icon, it requests that I
add a server.... I just selected "Done" as I do not have a server. All was
well and the Project Guide Returned.

I guess I don't understand the functionality that is unavailable to you that
you think should be there. If you are looking for risk tracking, it cannot
be done on the stand alone versions of MS Project - you must work in
conjunction with Server. You will need to track risks manually using some
type of risk manager database. We did one a few years back in Access.
