You might find some useful ideas on pages 59 and 60 of some notes on the way
I use Word for the Mac, titled "Bend Word to Your Will", which are available
as a free download from the Word MVPs' website
(
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Bend/BendWordToYourWill.html).
[Note: "Bend Word to your will" is designed to be used electronically and
most subjects are self-contained dictionary-style entries. If you decide to
read more widely than the item I've referred to, it's important to read the
front end of the document -- especially pages 3 and 5 -- so you can select
some Word settings that will allow you to use the document effectively.]

You don't have to get into the Footer to change the size of the page numbers
Just use Format>Style and change the text size of the "Page Number" style

Thanks to all three who tried to help me. Somehow I stumbled into the simplest method, as outlined by Mr. McGhie, which I'd like to share with others who may have the same problem: as he said, go to Format -->Style, then find Page Number on the list in the upper left, and then choose New or Modify at the bottom. There you get a chance to choose type face and font size and Apply. One other factor I had to adjust was the distance from the bottom of the page: the default was .5, which put the number halfway off the printable area, so I went to the Formatting Palette (after going to View and checking Headers & Footers) and increased the number to .7.
