SkipNumbering or New Style?

Joshua

Hi -
With the MVPs' help, I have macro'd my numbered list templates. Now I have
to decide how to handle follow-on paragraphs within the bulleted/numbered
lists. For example:

Body Text at this level.
1. First entry at this list level.
More info for this step, new "follow-on" paragaph - not numbered.
2. Second entry at this level.
3. Third entry at this level.
- Bulleted list.
- Second entry at this level.
More info for this bullet - new "follow-on" paragraph, not
bulleted.
- List continues etc.

after reviewing the older posts, I see two options:

1) Resurrect the "skip numbering" command and put it on my toolbar. Then
follow-on paras have the same list style, but no numbering. Big Question: is
this stable? Is it buggy local formatting like "restart numbering"? Will it
generate spaghetti?

2) Define a "continued" style for each level of indent in my
bulletted/numbered lists. These styles would probably be useful for other
things, like bulletless bullet paragraphs that start with run-in headers.
Any problems with this approach?

What do more knowedgable folks recommend?

Thanks
Joshua

Hi Joshua

Styles, every time.

If you 'skip numbering', then you are back to having a piece of the
'numbering' information on the paragraph directly formatted. I wouldn't risk
it.

If you use Word's built-in numbering styles (the List Number and List Bullet
series), there are List Continue styles designed for this very purpose.

Thanks!

I figure I can design a "drop-down" for my macro button (like the little
grid that opens from the Insert Table button) that shows the various
indented styles - both numbered and plain. Then the user would have a visual
cue to help pick the style they want to apply...

Thanks again for your help

- do these styles have "magic" properties that increase stability, like the
Heading styles?

I have implemented the Margaret Aldis/Dave Rado macro for resetting list
styles and list templates without using the Format>Bullets&Numbering
dialog... so I assume that it's just a matter of renaming the styles in my
macro to use the built-in styles, yes?

Thanks!

OK

I don't know that they have any magic properties. I just find them
convenient because (a) they already include the hanging indent I (usually)
need, and (b) using them avoids unnecessarily adding new styles to the
template.
