Since downloading the newer version Windows installer (in a service pack), it
no longer recognizes my Office 2003. This is a problem because my Office 2003
disc was broken in two by some short, bouncy, people I call my children. Now,
I get an error message if I try to oepn anything in Office--eg document,
spreadsheet, etc.
I don't know whether my cache is missing or mislabled because I am a
computer neophyte and this seems beyond my skills. I downloaded Listool to
look and then just stared at it in terror. (way beyond my skills) Would going
back in time (oh how I wish) and doing an early system restore make my
windows installer believe in Office 2003 again and stop telling me to insert
the original installation disc? Or am I living a pipe dream? I have read
other answers here but don't venture into Registry to change names etc. Other
than buying a new Office 2003, anyone have any ideas (besides keeping
breakable things from small children?) No offense taken if this was too long
to bother to read. I don't suppose Microsoft resells discs if you give them
your product ID and a broken bundle of evidence?

If your copy of Office came with your computer, you need to go back to your
computer manufacturer. I fear you will be SOL with that tho.

If you purchased Office separately, then follow Mary's link.
