slanting category labels

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Power PC

I can't figure out how to get the x axis category labels to slant at a 45° angle - older charts still have the slanted labels. I tried "Rotate all text 270°" in the format axis dialog, but nothing changes.
