slide numbers showing up when it's not turned on

OK. I'm stumped. We have just a simple two slide presentation. The user
never added slide numbering to it. There are no hidden text boxes anywhere.
When you look at the slide you don't see the slide number. When you run the
presentation, you don't see the slide number. You only see the slide number
when you are in print preview or when you print. I look at the master slide.
Nothing. What am I missing? it can't be in the footer. When I add a white
box with over the spot where the slide number appears it then covers the
mystery slide number. It has to be on the slide somehow but doesn't show up
anywhere but print preview. Any ideas?

Are you printing in B&W?

If you view the slide in B&W can you see it ?(view >color/greyscale>Pure B&W)

Kim,
Maybe you have the box don't show on title slides, checked in the header and
footer dialog? That would mean you have two title slides though.

I got it. As soon as it went greyscale I went into Master slide and saw the
little text box with the # symbol in it. I deleted those boxes in the master
slide and now all is well. What I still don't understand, is how on earth
did changing it from color to greyscale show them? Why didn't they show in
color? And color or greyscale it should not have shown a number because in
the header/footer options there was no checkmark next to slide number? I'm
just trying to understand how it all works.
