slide show crashes on 10.3.9

E

esimmons205

I'm using the Powerpoint that came with Office Mac Pro 04. It crashes
when I try to go into slide show mode.

I'm using a 1Ghz iBook G4 running Mac OS 10.3.9.

I've already tried removing and reinstalling, and also taking out the
Microsoft and powerpoint plist files from my preferences folder. No go
on either one.

I've never run slide show mode on this application successfully.
Immediately upon the screen going black to show slide show mode, the
application crashes and I get the "report/do not report error to
Microsoft" error message.

Hi,

Have you tried using Apple's Disk Utility to repair permissions? If not
give that a whirl.

I'm having the same problem as esimmons205. I'm running a 1.25Ghz
PowerBook G4 with Mac OS 10.3.9 with Office:Mac 2004 v 11.2.
When I try to preview a slideshow in Powerpoint, the screen goes black
then aborts and I get the error message.
I've repaired permissions, uninstalled and reinstalled Office:Mac, and
run apple and microsoft updates. Nothing seems to work. Also, the
same presentation runs in slideshow on a PC without a hitch.
Any suggestions?

How much memory do you have installed? PPT needs a LOT of RAM. I used
the Activity Monitor utility the other day to check my RAM usage while
I was working in a PPT presentation. At that time I had 36 color
pictures and very little else in the slide show. PPT alone used over
500 MB of my 1.25 GB of RAM. I was not running any other applications
at the time but the basic RAM overhead left me with less than 400 MB of
unallocated memory.

Just a thought.

I've got 640 MB of RAM on my iBook, and I'm talking a slide show with
one slide and the text "This is just a test," on it crashes immediately.

Because I am really interested in getting this problem resolved, I am
going to paste the error report here. As I said, I've already repaired
permissions, reset the preferences, reinstalled, and all that.

Hello Eric,

I was unable to reproduce the problem on a 1 ghz (actually 1.07 ghz) iBook
G4 (model code PowerBook 6,5) on OS 10.3.9. I tried a variety of
resolutions and color depths including 1024x768 x millions at which you're
running at.

Can you see if lowering your video resolution or changing color depth helps?
Also, for you and the other person on here, it wouldn't hurt to run the
Apple Hardware Test overnight to see if it turns up anything. Let me know
if it passes or fails.

I have been having the same problem for many months.

It would appear that a later comment by Corentin:
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...c4dee06d601/c2246e0a62c51f4d#c2246e0a62c51f4d,
may have hit on the cause of all these problems.

When I'm at the office, I receive presentations produced in a Windows
environment. When I open them on my Mac, there is the usual 'metafile
conversion' process. I then save the file and start working on it. I
usually get a 'disappearing act' after a chart or animation
modification.

To avoid losing all my work, I have resorted to frequent save
as...using a different file name. Needless to say, this very
inconvenient.

Hope this helps.

Hello Pedro,

The issue that you're describing is most likely unrelated to what Eric
originally discussed in this thread. He states "I've got 640 MB of RAM on
my iBook, and I'm talking a slide show with one slide and the text "This is
just a test," on it crashes immediately."

Do you know the exact version of Windows PowerPoint which created the files
you received? Do you know what versions touched (saved to) them? If you
wouldn't mind emailing me a repro file, it might aid in our investigation.
Please remove the"online." portion from the email address that you see.

If Microsoft Error Reporting comes up, please DO click Send. Posting or
emailing me the contents of the error report might also help us.

Hello!

I am experiencing the exact same issue as Pedro (ibook, 600MHz, 640MB
RAM, 10.3.9), all updates applied: PPT Version 11.2. I have deleted
prefs, reinstalled, run disk utility repair permissions and disk first
aid. Cleared cache files with Cache Out X utility. Nothing helps.

Regarding your suggestion below to find out what exact version the
power point was created in... Not only does it crash with existing
power point files, I just created a brand new file on this computer and
am still receiving the crashes. I have sent the error reports to MS.

If anyone has any other suggestions or a solution, that would be great.

Thanks,

UPDATE: I just sent this same power point file and another that was
crashing on the slide show to my PowerBookG4 running Power Point 11.1.1
and the slide show works on both files.

I am a little wary upgrading this version to 11.2, but will do so to
see if I can replicate the crash on my power book. This will determine
whether it is the file (I think not) or the 11.2 upgrade.

Hello Cheryl,

Can you clarify your scenario and repro steps?

This thread has become confusing because there's discussion of at least two
seperate issues. Eric was experiencing a crash when starting slide show on
his iBook even w/a simple presentation with one line of text. I was not
able to reproduce it and am still awaiting more info. The other is w/Pedro
having problems while saving.

Do you crash when just starting slide show w/a blank presentation or a
single slide presentation containing one line of text? Can you either post
the crash logs from Microsoft Error Reporting or email them to me? It would
help A LOT in my investigation.

Thanks,
Andrew

Andrew,

Sorry for the confusion... I am experiencing PowerPoint crashing when
trying to play a slide show.

It does not matter whether the slide show is a large file with many
graphics or fonts (pre-existing files);

or a small, one-slide, one-line of text (Helvetica or Arial) file (that
I created new, myself).

I only see this crash occuring on a 600MHz iBook (specs listed in
previous post). When I copied the files to my PowerBook the slide-shows
ran fine, even after updating my PowerBook's Office suite to 11.2.x.

This iBook is a faculty member's, whom I am trying to help resolve this
problem, so I do not have any log files now. I did submit all crash
reports to MS.

One thing I did notice about the iBook, is that the hard drive was
running at 90% full. I recommended to the faculty member to backup and
remove files to get the hard drive around 50% to see if this helps.

Andrew,

PS. Even though I do not have a log file to send, I do remember that
they looked extremely familiar to what Eric's log file (posted
previous) shows...

Hello Cheryl,

Thank you for the information in your other post. It would be very helpful
if you could get a crash log and post it/email it to me if you're able to
still reproduce the problem. A crash log that looks "similar" to another
may in fact be totally unrelated.

Thanks,
Andrew

Hello Eric,

If you're still experiencing the problem and haven't found a solution,
interestingly, another user had an identical call stack (from the MERP log)
and found his own solution. It can be found at:
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...point+crashing+slideshow+mac#d012027958f5a8bd

From his post:
">Meanwhile we could track it down a bit further. It is definitely something
in /System/Library but we don't know exactly what. When we replace this
folder with the one from a working system the problem disappears.

Now we solved it. The problem was caused by:
/System/Library/CFMSupport/OpenGLLib
The resource fork "cfrg" was missing (the only resource fork), so it had a
wrong icon and was detected as a simple Unix executable instead of a
library.
We replaced it with a proper one and all is fine now. "

If you're still having the issue, try the above and reply as to whether it
worked for you.
