How can I get music to play during the whole slide show
and not just individual slides?

it is best to tell what version you have:
in the PowerPoint 2000 here is what I do:

insert the sound
click yes for it to play automatically
go to Slide Show drop down menu
click on custom animation
click on the media to highlight it
click on the multimedia settings
check the circle continue slide show
change the box that says after: to the number of the slide you want it to
stop playing.
