Slide show timing - front end too slow - how do I change?

I've set my slide show to auto advance at 20 seconds per page. I've done
custom animation w/text on each slide. My problem is - rather than the
custom animation starting immediately after the slide turns, the animation
seems to be delayed in kicking in & hence the text isn't remaining on screen
as long as I'd like before turning to the next page. So, how do I get the
animation kick in immediately after the page turns and then just have the
slide remain on screen for the remainder timing?

Put in an extra object (like a rectangle or circle) and drag it off the edge
of the slide. Set it to animate however many seconds after the real
animation.
