When I am showing a presentation the slide sorter will come on over the
presentation screen. What can I do to stop this?

I wonder if you have presenter view turned on (Slide Show > Set Up Show).

I'm not sure. It asked me to rate my question

What do you see when you go to the Slide Show menu and choose Set Up Show?
Is presenter view checked?

No the presenter is not checked. It seems that after a slidehas been up for
a minute or 2 the slide sorter appears as a new screen on top of the the
slide that is being projected

OK. Now we have to do some real debugging. What version of PowerPoint are
you using? What version of Windows? Do you have multiple monitors or a
video card that supports multiple monitors? Does this happen on one machine
or every machine? Does this happen with one PowerPoint on the problem
machine or every PowerPoint?
