Slideshow reverts to first slide

When I try to run a slide show and switch to an external projector, the
previous slide function triggers automatically and sends the show back to the
first slide. There is an audio clicking sound to indicate this is happening.
After that, I can't get it to advance and clicking sound repeats rapidly
until I escape the show.

It does not matter whether a projector is attached or not. Does this sound
like a software issue, driver issue, or something else?

Thanks for any ideas.
