I am trying to use Powerpoint to create a slideshow containing about 150
family photographs. Is it necessary to insert photos one at a time or is
there a way to select the photographs and have them inserted into 150
individual pages each containing but one photograph?

For PowerPoint 2002/XP and above, you can make use of PhotoAlbum feature.
Click Insert > Picture > New Photo Album. For PowerPoint 2000, you will need
to download the free Microsoft Photo Album add-in.
