slightly OT search engine question

This might be a dumb question, but I'm going to ask it anyway...

I've been told that it helps your google ranking if other web sites link
to you, so I'm assuming that it would be advantageous to put a "links"
page on each site I'm working on that links back to all my other sites.
So my question is... is it enough for google that the "links" page is in
the site or should it be a part of the navigation? I'm really hoping to
simply hide it in each of the sites I'm working on since they don't
exactly have any sort of relationship with each other. And if the link
page needs to be part of the navigation, could it simply be some sort of
hidden link like a 1x1 pixel clear gif?

A page with a list of links is legit.
Also, how long has the site been "up."
It can take a month or two to become "indexed."
Also, have you submitted your site??
And also, the site to get listed with is dmoz.
http://www.dmoz.com/
then all of the search engines will pick you up.

Well I've done that and yet I'm still not exactly getting the best of
results. That's when someone told me that I also need referral links
from other sites. If I just put a page of links in the site would it be
considered tricking google? And would it be helpful? I'm working on
getting some of our vendors to link us to their site, but I figured
every little bit helped.

It is not tricking the SE's to have a links page that is not linked from the
site pages - but I don't see it being much value either. It would be
tricking, or could be considered tricking if you created a nearly invisible
link to the links page though. Where google gives you more rank or ranks you
higher is when other sites, of related content and high google rank link to
your site. The better the rank of the site linking to yours, the better
google may rank your site. It will consider your site popular by credible
"referral" so to speak.

But, if you are asking other related sites to swap links with you - put a
link from thier site links page to your site in exchange for a link from
your site to theirs - there is very little value to the other site if your
link to their site isn't linked from any page on your web! Personally, I
wouldn't exchange links with someone that doesn't have a visible, linked in
the navigation, links page. :)

Ok.. Thanks for the help!!! I guess I'll just depend on the vendor
links then. The site's been up for a while and the original person who
worked on it said that they listed it on all the major search engines,
but I'll go to dmoz right now (and maybe revisit all the other ones as
well)!
