Slooooooooow Database Design

i have a access 2003 database which is split. the front end is about 10MB as
is the backend. The backend is not buried deep and is only 2 directories
down from the share. \\Sharename\Database\FE - Not something i think is out
of the ordinary. when noone is in the database i can edit the front end on
my pc with no problems, responds well. when users are using the databse i
cannot get a query, or report anything to open for almost a minute at a time.
this includes saving time as well. I am not using the same file the users
are, we all have our own front end copies. What is going on? isnt the point
of splitting the database to serve that purpose?

please help. i have compacted, checked many hints and tips and nothing works.

Matthew,

Have you gone through the performance section of Tony Toews' site?
http://www.granite.ab.ca/access/performancefaq.htm

Do a quick test by opening a table and minimize it. With that table
minimized, open your "slow" query or reports etc. Do you notice improvement
in performance?

I went thru his site and options, however i will check it again as i haven't
been there in a while. i used to notice a huge improvement by keeping tables
open, but now i don't

what really gets me is if keeping a table open solves the problem, then why
hasn't microsoft addressed this in a patch.

Not sure, maybe MS doesnt see it as a bug....

If you still have no success after going thru the performance checklist, I
would look at the environment (network). Make sure eveyone has full access
to the share. I have solved a performance issue before by simply yanking a
hub and replace it with a switch.
