Thanks a lot for the help Robert.
It gets fast again when I run it in safe mode, but there
was no improvement when running from the shortcut even
after disabling the add-ins. Everything has always
worked just fine, it's just too slow.

Does it still happen when you start Outlook in safe mode?
Start-> Run; "path to outlook.exe" /safe
If it runs quickly now disable all your add-ins and see if it still fast. If
so; enable them one by one to determine the one that's causing you the
issues

Some time ago my outlook started taking a long time to
open and close. Messages take a while to open and close
as well. It hangs when moving from one window to
another. Uses 100% CPU, then drops to nearly 0 when the
task is done. Just in one instance it went back to work
at normal speed, but the next time I opened it went back
to be as sluggish as it has been and I had not done
anything special; it just happened then went back to
slow. I tried the repair tool, reinstalled it, tried
various virus scans, deleted most messages, and anything
I could think of, but to no avail.
I use OL2000 sp3 on Windows XP Pro.
Please help!
