slow browsing folders

I have this same problem in all of my Office apps. If use Windows Explorer I
can browse my folders and open files just fine. But if I click on File, Open
from within Word (or Excel, Outlook) it takes an exceptionally long time open
up a folder and reveal the contents. Any thoughts?

What operating system and what version of Word are you using?

If you are using Windows 7 and Word 2007, are you using Windows 7 RTM? I
notice the display of the Open and Save dialog boxes are slow in Windows 7
and, as I understand it, the speed has been increased in Windows 7 RTM. I
haven't had a chance to test this yet - I'm still trying to find the time to
rebuild my computer and install Windows 7 RTM.

Are you connected to a network? If you have any mapped drives that are
disconnected that can slow the Open and Save dialog boxes down as well. If
you find you have disconnected network drives, try unmapping them and see if
that clears it up.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've already tried disconnecting all network
drives and still have the problem even trying to open a local path like My
Documents. Interestingly, if I log in under another profile (like
administrator) the problem doesn't exist so it's clearly tied to this
profile. The problem is throughout the Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
but if I use Explorer to navigate folders they popup immediately. Very
strange.

Does the behavior continue to occur if you start Word in Safe Mode? Exit
Word and restart it while holding the Ctrl key. Continue holding until
you're prompted to start in Safe Mode.
