Slow column resize

In Excel 2008, when I try to resize a column by clicking and dragging on the column divider, it is very slow. A small yellow popup appears telling me the width as I drag. Has anyone else seen this? This problem occurs if I open a brand new worksheet. I am using Mac OS X 10.4.10. Thanks.
