slow download

cris

I have pages on my site that take 100 seconds to download, at least that
what the REPORT says and it also says it on the bottom of the pages when I
working in front page (2002).
Since I just had a table with a few rows and 2 photos 1/2 the size that they
were initially, (I compressed them) it doesn't seem like it's so much stuff
to have such a long download.
Could someone PLEASE help me understand why my site has about 95% slow
pages!!!
I don't know how to reduce my photos anymore so that they still look good.
Are my photos to large after compressing or does that not do a thing??
Help...please.

It must be your Photos what file format are they in? (should be jpg for
Photos)
An URL would help.

A page, together with all its images, CSS sheets, external JavaScript files
etc. should not exceed about 60KB. This will give a download time of about
20 seconds using a 33Kbs modem.
FrontPage tends to overestimate the download time for a page, especially
when some images are used multiple times in the page. The time shown when
editing the page seems to be more accurate than the time in the reports.

I'm really not sure how others are viewing it and if it's actually really
slow for them .
I'm going off of my report which you pointed out could be wrong.
HoweverI'd love for someone with knowledge to take a peek and help me tweek
this site but I'm not really comfortable posting the url here.
Any other way to get that to someone who really cares.
I'd actually really love the crtic...I can take it!

When I compress photos for a web site, shouldn't that be reducing it
specifically for a web site viewer.
It shouldn't require more tweeking or should it. I use the compress photo
for web button.
And like I said, 100 seconds to download 2 compressed photos and 3 lines of
text seems odd.

When I open my web site and edit with front page I go to picture properties
and use the edit button that opens my photo and gives me cjoices to compress
for a web page or a email or not to compress at all.
When i compress the photos I see the file size reduces greatly but I don't
recall the size it said.
I'll have to look it up.
But I do appreciate the response from all.
I'm new to this and not sure how to leave arate but will figure it out when
I have more time to read through the info.
my site is www.bonsainorthshore.com
I'm getting ready to redo it and want to do a better job next time.

If you want the site to load fast, make all those photos thumbnails linked to
the actual photo. You can adjust the size of the thumbnail large enough that
the viewer can see what it is and know if they want to view the actual photo.
Look at this page and see what I'm talking about. With 4 photos and logo it
downloads in 15 seconds or so.

Sounds like great advice. Awesome, I'll do it.
I have no idea why those % appear in the first place.
How do I view it to remove all%?? Erase HTMl?

You take out the spaces in the filenames, and replace them with a character
such as an underbar _ or hyphen - , or just make it one long word.
For example, instead of: this is my page.htm you make it this_is_my_page.htm
or thisismypage.htm

This isn't working out for me.
It appears the auto HTML writer puts dashes in spaces???
I'm probably not looking for it in the right place.
I'm feeling really inadequate right now.
I couldn't use that space remover I tried to download either, nothinhg.
Thsi isn't good. I'm not getting anywhere.
I'd like to see one page go from slow to f

Try the site again, please.
i removed the hover buttons but my report still says it's 40 seconds and
i've compressed photos in othert pages that didn't change the speed any still
at 100.
Can't fiqure out how to rename stuff or spaces the html doesn't appear to
have spaces in the file names that appear where I can see them.
I'm still not getting it,
Anyway , could you let me know if oyu tried to download my site and if it
seemed slow or not.

I use Microsoft picture manager.
I resized the photo to be a small web photo and then compressed it.
Ididn't se the time change any at east not on the bottom of the screen when
I had it opened to edit in front page,
I did remove the Java on the view nurs. page as well but also didn't notice
any time change.
I'm going to go through the photos again later and try to reduce them a bit
or split them up and have several pages.
Thanks again

Cris:

All 20+ of the responses you've received are bogus advice.

It is clear you have the same problem I do - namely, that Front Page is
downloading at 28.8kbps insstead of your proper speed for your internet
connection.

I have two machines with two Front Page installs and both do this.

Everything else downloads at more than 3mbps (my connection is rated at up
to 4mbps), FTP downloads at 3 to 4 mbps as does browsing folders in Internet
Explorer. Additionally, I sometimes use my webhost's "File Manager" onlinr
program which is a Java script utility and everything uploads and downloads
at my conneciton's near-max rated speed, so all those java tips are bogus too.

See my entry dated 02/02/25 titled "Front Page downloads at 28.8kbps no
matter what"

What's weird is mine UPLOADS just fine at 512kbps.

I was really disappointed to see your entry here from October with no
straight reply from one of the MS-paid hosts, meaning they know about this
problem and probably have no intention of helping us out.
