Slow Draw with Excel VBA 2000

Multiple draw objects written with VBA .AddPolyline, .AddLine and
..AddTextBox are slower by a factor of at least 3 in 2000 vs 97. After
a few hundred shapes, the system gets slower and slower. Being stuck
with 2000 (Windows Prof and Excel) it's no longer feasible to use this
plotting capability for finite element meshes involving a few thousand
shapes per sheet. Any suggestions?
