slow file open

New dual core computer running office 2003 pro takes a very long time to
bring up a file list if I select the "Look In" pull-down bar. System is
faster if i use the "my Computer" option in the LH side of the file open
window. Curiously, this latter gets slow if selected after using the
pull-down menu. Fast searching / indexing service is enabled.
