slow file opening in Word

i am using windows xp. whenever i open a word file, the
system reacts very slowly. i have over 500mg of RAM
available (have added memory to try to correct the
problem), but it doesn't seem to have made any
difference. has anyone encountered this problem and do
you have a fix for it?
