Slow OLE-objects in Access XP reports.

I have upgraded from office 97 to xp, and this has caused
some of my access reports to use minutes to open (in
contrast to about 10 secs in office 97). If I use the
performance tool it suggests that I convert my OLE-
objects (a bunch of electrical symbols) to pictures. If I
try doing this Access crashes.

Any suggestions what could make my reports open faster?
(I tried recompiling the code - that didn't help either.)
