Slow opening documents

I have a very strange problem with Office XP.

The operating system is Windows 98 and Office XP is
service packed to release 2.

When opening a document from within word the file open the
document opens instantly. If however you open directly
from the document say for example a word document on your
desktop it takes around 30 seconds to open. This even
occurs if Word is open already. I have installed a patch
relating to the alternative user MS document 230256 the
fault persisted. I also recreated a new normal.dot. This
is on any document. Any ideas please
