slow performance hourglass on every 30 seconds

i recently started experiencing verty slow performance in
word 2000. The cursor changes to the hourglass about
every 20 seconds. I have turned off fast saves and have
backup documents only every 20 minutes. nothing seems to
help. Exel works fine. any suggestions?

Have you turned off any anti-virus plugins? Check in the options of the
anti-virus program you might be running and uncheck it.

thanks Andre, but I have the plugins turned off and the
problem still persists. any other thoughts?
