Slow Performance

Neo Gigs

Hi there,

Running G4800MHz with 640MB RAM. MS Office vX is slow, especially in
Word. Are there any guides, tips, hints or work around to speed things
up? Especially during scrolling of pages is slowest.

Thanks

Neo

Hi Neo,

I think the answer is that Word X is just slower than Word 2001 was,
especially for long documents. Working in Normal view instead of Page
Layout should be faster. You can run through the troubleshooting tips here,
just to make sure there is nothing corrupt on your system slowing it down.
I think the updates helped with performance issues.

(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

You can use google groups to search this group and the
microsoft.public.mac.office.word group for previous discussion of this
issue. Of course, adding more RAM always helps.

I'm noticing slower overall performance in Office 2004 compared to Office
v.X on both my desktop and laptop systems. Slower launch times, sluggish
response in the apps themselves; just overall slower than the previous
version.

My desktop is a dual 867 G4 MDD tower, which used to launch Excel X in about
3-5 seconds. Office 2004, same machine, takes about 30 seconds to launch. I
don't have a stopwatch but I click on the icon in the Dock and count
one-one-thousand, etc until I get the menu bar and blank document.

Performance in Word is slow, and going to Normal view only has a modest
impact on that sluggishness.

I've also noticed performance issues in Powerpoint. Slower screen draws,
longer time for text to appear. Does Office 2004 suffer if you've got lots
of fonts? I have a bunch.

Entourage seems alright, but perhaps slightly slower when typing notes like
this one. That might have something to do with the anti-aliasing I'm
noticing in these notes. I suspect Office 2004 makes extensive use of the
Quartz graphic ability in OS X.

Any tips to improve overall performance in the entire suite? I've repaired
permissions a couple times since installing. Doesn't seem to factor into it,
so I'm thinking there might be something else to look at.

The installer took care up the updates. I'm using the Pro edition, and
installed it the day the updates came out. I'll check again for more.

Thanks in advance,
Alex H.
