Slow Saving

D

Dave

Using Project Server 2003, we have a number of projects (a small
proportion of the overall number) for which it takes over an hour to
save the project.

Any ideas why this might happen? If this happens to a project, it
doesn't matter which workstation you try to save it from - the effect is
always the same.

Needless to say, this renders the application pretty much useless for
those projects.

Our projects are not especially large. Generally less than 1000 tasks
and lasting less than 2 years.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Baselines, Custom Fields and Number of Assignments. If you have more than 4 -
5 baselines, consider the amount of time phased data, if there are a lot of
local custom fields, and if there are many assignments on each of the tasks
for long durations, again, consider the amount of time phase data.

Sometimes, they just get a lot of extra data hanging around. You can always
save it out as an MPP file and then reimport it and see if it shrinks.

Thanks for your reply. There is only one baseline and not many custom
fields. I can see that the time spent saving might be roughly linearly
proportional to the number of baselines but we are talking about over an
hour here.

Perhaps it is also worth pointing out that this happened suddenly and is
not a gradual creeping up of the time required to save.

There are not many custom fields.

I would have trouble reimporting an MPP file because of the way we use
protected actuals although I guess that could be done as a last resort.

Dave:

2003 has a number of conditions that can cause file bloat. Try this therapy
and see if it helps:

Also, make sure that your database statistices are periodically updated
through a SQL maintenance plan.
