Slow - Where is Microsoft?

I see lots of posts all about the same thing... Office is
slow taking 1 to 2 minutes to start up. With so many
people experiencing the same problem, it seems clear there
is a systematic problem here.

Where is Microsoft? What are they doing to address this?
Do they ever read these posts? Can someone please give us
all some answers.

If you bothered to look a few threads down, you'll see that there is a
solution which states that you turn off Norton's Office file scanner. Look
for thread entitled "Slow Opening Files - Part 2"

The problem is with Norton. Go to tools, misc.,
disable "Office Plugin". That should do it. Had to due
with yesterdays updates.

Computer hangs when I right click a file

Disabling the office plugin fixes the MS Office hanging problem. The second problem is when I right click on any file or folder, the sytem hangs for like 30 seconds until it reacts. Any ideas as to what this could be?

OK, another post says this:

If you have Norton Antivirus and got the Jan 7 2004 ish update, you
are probably getting a long delay opening files, opening Norton
Antivirus configuration panels, openning office docs and even right
clicking.
If you disconnect your ethernet, it fixes it, but thats not a good
solution if you are networked and require it.
Symantec will probably have a fix later but for now, here's what we
found that works for now.

1. First, disconnect your ethernet, otherwise this process will be
verys slow.
2. Go to your Norton Antivirus, and disable the automatic Liveupdate
3. Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
4. Rename the file called CommonClient.dat to something else like
CommonClient.dat.bad
5. Rename the file called CommonClient_old.dat to CommonClient.dat
6. Reconnect your ethernet.
7. Until theres a new fix for this, DON'T do client updates with NAV's
liveupdate!

Now, you can right click files again, open NAV's control panel,
actually have your office files scanned, etc.

If you don't find the right CommonClient.dat file, try to find an
older version from another PC that did not get the latest update.

As a last resort, reinstall NAV, and don't do the client update.
Hope that helps, it worked for me and 5 other co-workers who had
automatic live updates enabled!

Set the date, via the Control Panel, to 7th Jan 2003 or earlier.

NAV-2003 and your PC should then work fine.

I have the most recent NAV-2003 updates. Setting the date to 8th or
9th of Jan causes my PC to crawl.

Perhaps, Norton want us all to upgrade to NAV-2004.

This doesnt solve the problem with the right-click for file
properties, and for email scan attachment problems. The only way to
handle these is to disable all of the protection we are paying for.
Anyone else find this terribly ironic that the most "virus" complaints
that I have ever had, come from problems with the the Anti Virus
......... Anyway, Symantic should have a big appology on their website,
or atleast an explanation. Eff it, I should just start using the free
AVG. I have used AVG for 3 occasions where a virus gets by NAV then
disables it rendering it useless, then NAV will release a "utility"
that will clean it if you can determine which new virus you have with
out the disabled NAV. 30 bucks a year for these per user
subscriptions is starting to seem like a lot of money .... Sorry for
complaining, but there is no where for me to yell at norton with out
paying an extra 30 bucks for one phone call, that would be better
spent on a case of beer to eliviate this stress, which I am also
paying for.
