Slow with large tables

M

Mike Sibley

Word is getting really slow in responding as the length of a table in a
document grows. The display on the screen is not keeping up with the
typing. The table is currently 67 pages. Is this just the way it is with
large tables, or is there some fix?

I think that's pretty much just the way it is with long tables, and 67 pages
certainly qualifies as long.

Is there anywhere you can break the table, put a subheading as a paragraph
instead of a row of cells? Or break it temporarily for editing.

Normal view might be faster.

In support of what Daiya is saying: Click where you want to have a break in
the table -> Table menu -> Split table. To get rid of the resulting
paragraph mark later, hit the Forward Delete key.

* A SUGGESTION ‹ WAIT FOR CONSIDERED ADVICE: If you post a question, keep
re-visiting the newsgroup for several days after the first response comes
in. Sometimes it takes a few responses before the best or complete solution
is proposed; sometimes you'll be asked for further information so that a
better answer can be provided. Good tips about getting the best out of
posting are at http://word.mvps.org/FindHelp/Posting.htm (if you use Safari
and it gives you a blank page the first time, you may need to hit the
circular arrow icon -- "Reload the current page" -- a few times).

* AND ONE MORE ‹ AVOID SPAM: To avoid spam directed at contributors of
newsgroups, you can set up a "send-only" dummy e-mail account. Full

Hey, hey...

Which I don't think has been mentioned here before is to select the Table,
and in Table | Properties, Row Tab, and uncheck "Allow row to break across
pages". (Which is checked by default)

In Page Layout View, working in a row broken across to pages can make things
a little slower.

Thanks

After searching the usergroup, I found a BUNCH of things to turn on or off,
but the only thing that helped was to use Table Split every 10 pages or so.
Thanks to all!
