Slow Word Response - system.exe corrupt??

Someone suggested that my Word 2002 program may be slow to load and respond because of a corrupt system file. I ran sfc.exe and it reported that I should restore c:\windows\system\user.exe

My computer came with W98 preinstalled and my system recovery CD apparently does not have system.exe on it. What can I do to restore the file if it is indeed corrupt?

PS:
A Microsoft tech note says the the file size should be 264016 bytes for W98. Mine is 557056 bytes

PPS:
I restored the file from a .cab on my hard disk and then couldn't get windows to boot until I re-restored the file that sfc flagged as bad. Word is still like molasses of course.
