Sluggish Behavior of Version 11.3

I am running OSX 10.4.9 Office 2004 G4 Quicksilver (896 MB RAM)

Word 11.3 (070131) behaves very erratically. There is often considrable lag
between a mouse action - clicking, scrolling, moving a window - and the
response of Word. You get the experience of of a slow-witted person who
responds to commands but a significant time delay.

What is the cause and remedy for this?

Hi Russ -

Is this true even if you log out/in & restart Word? Or is it only after the
program has been running for a while? Is this the case with all docs or just
certain ones?

Is this a new development? If so can you think of anything that may have
changed on your system at about the same time?

Do you have any add-ins or other processes that run in the background?

What percentage of your HD is full - how much free space?

What system are you running it on? What other programs and prcesses
are running in the background? It sounds like your PC may not be fast
enough to run Word efficiently.

I too have sluggish behavior in Word. I run Office for Mac 2004, 11.3 on a
PowerPC G5, OSX, version 10.4.9. I have plenty of memory, ram etc. This
appears to have started with either one of the system upgrades or Microsoft
upgrades. It is very time consuming and does not seem to matter what else is
running (even if Word is the only program running) or how soon after a
re-start.

I'm not sure what you mean by "memory, ram etc." as memory & RAM are the
same thing. Also, "plenty" isn't a measurement system value I'm familiar
with Less than 1 GB may hinder speed & more may be recommendable depending
on the nature of your files & their content.

However, based on what you describe the first thought is to make sure Office
is fully updated - current version is 11.3.4. Also, download & apply the OS
X 10.4.9 COMBO updater from the Apple site (not the one Software Update
delivers), then run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions. See if
performance improves.

Well I did as advised. I had already used Software Update to upgrade to
10.4.9 but I used the Combo file to do so again and then I performed
assorted maintenance routines including permissions repair using Onyx.

Word is now behaving much more crisply. I sure there was't so much voodoo
associated with computer diagnosis!

Hi Russ -

Glad things are back to normal, but it really isn't so much a matter of
voodoo as it is a matter of "preventive maintenance" - like getting the oil
changed and making sure the drain plug is put back where it belongs
