small caps in heading 1 numbering scheme

Ellen

I want my heading 1 to be "Article 1" or "Article 2" or
whatever the appropriate number is, but I want the
word "Article" to be in small caps. When I click on the
font button, the small caps option is grayed out. Does
anybody know how to apply small caps within the
numbering? Thanks.

This has come up before, and I think the conclusion we sadly reached is that
Small Caps formatting is just not available for number labels. But perhaps
someone else remembers differently (and can provide a solution).

Can be done, but not without sacrifice.

Type in 'Article' followed by a space. Then press Ctrl-F9 and type
between the brackets:

{ LISTNUM \L 1 }

Press Alt-F9 to see the number.

Select the word 'Article' and the LISTNUM field together and put them
in the Small Caps font you want. While they're both selected, you
might want to make them into a re-usable AutoText entry via Tools >
AutoCorrect > AutoText > Add.

The sacrifice is your TOC entries for that level won't be automatic
anymore. For each Article, you have to select the number and the
heading, then Shift-Alt-o to create a TC field.

P.S. Are you surprised that they would grey out the Small Caps option?
Small Caps are sometimes used in real life. But who ever uses Shadow,
Emboss, Outline or Engrave fonts on their numbers? No one. That's
why they're all available.
