small caps in TOC styles

Hi,

I have a TOC style set to "small caps". If the source text for the TOC entry
is in lower case then it is formatted with small caps in the TOC...this is
what I want. However, if the source text is in upper case it retains this
"upper-caseness" in the TOC, overriding the smallcaps setting. Is there a
way to set the TOC style so that it completely ignores the case of the
source text?

Thanks,

Adrian

If you have a heading style that you want to be all caps, don't type it with
Caps Lock on. Instead, format the heading style as All Caps. TOC entries
will pick up *all* direct formatting in headings (bold, italics, case,
etc.), which ordinarily is what you want.

Thanks Suzanne, but unfortunately this advice only seems to work when you
want to set the whole heading in caps. My problem is that only some words or
letters in the headings are in caps.

For example, my heading might be "Create an ODBC connection".

Inspired by your advice, I created a character style for ALL CAPS and
applied this to the letter "C" in "Create" and to "ODBC". Then I regenerated
the TOC. Unfortunately, it didn't work...I suspect your idea only works if
you set the PARAGRAPH style to all caps, which I don't want to do.

Thanks anyway,

Adrian

This is a situation where I would expect that you *would* want ODBC to be in
caps. Can you explain why you don't?

In the TOC, I want ODBC to be in small caps, like the rest of the TOC entry.
I simply don't like the mixture of caps and small caps in the same line.
It's hard to explain why; I just find it looks ugly, the parts in caps
looking like they use an incorrect font size. I'm being incredibly
subjective I know, and I'm not going to kill myself trying to achieve the
effect I want, so if it can't be done I guess it just can't be done!

Thanks for your advice Suzanne!

In that case, surely you need to set the font to 'All caps' and reduce the
font size?

The whole purpose of 'small caps' is to provide the mixture you don't like -
full sized caps for the proper capitals, and smaller size for what would
otherwise be in lower case.
