small photo insert in Word doc means excessively large filesizes

D

Displeased

Even a tiny tiny (<10KB) photo insert (of ANY file type; doesn't really
matter, so take your pick) into a .doc file balloons that file 3-10 fold. Why
is Word's own photo storage format (apparently not in the original's format
or else the .doc file wouldn't ballon up) be so inefficient?

You haven't provided much detail to go on.

Saving a new, blank Word 2003 file as .doc you'll likely get something around 24K file size. Adding a small (10K) GIF to that blank
file through Insert=>Picture=>From File brought the file size to 36K.

Q1: What version of Word are you using?

Q2: What File save format is the default in Tools=>Options=>Save?

Q3: What file type is the graphic?

Q4: What are the steps you're using?

Q5: Are you doing this in a blank document or ???

Just a few other things to check while you're at it, as suggested in a reply
by Suzanne B. to an earlier post on th same issue:
1. Fast Saves: Disable this at on the Save tab of Tools | Options.
2. Preview Picture: Clear the check box on the Summary tab of File |
Properties.

---ex., A 24k doc w/2.5k jpg saves @ 28k when cleared, 384k when checked.
3. Versions (File | Versions): Make sure "Automatically save version on
close" is not turned on.
4. Revisions (Tools | Track Changes)

All of these features can amplify file size tremendously.
