Small square indicator in left margin

J

Joe Andrew

In some of my documents, a small square indicator appears
on the screen in the left margin at certain places in the
document like where there is a heading or the first line
of a paragraph. This small marker does not print with the
document; it only shows up on the screen. It appears to
be an indicator of some sort, but I am darned if I can
figure out what it is. It doesn't seem to actually do
anything.

Any ideas?

This indicates that the paragraph is formatted with
the “Keep with next,” “Keep lines together,” “Page break
before,” or “Suppress line numbers” property. These
settings are found on the Line and Page Breaks tab of the
Format Paragraph dialog; if you double-click on
the “bullet” itself, you will bring up this dialog with
the Line and Page Breaks tab selected. Word's built-in
Heading styles by default are formatted as “Keep with
next,” so you will always see these bullets next to them.
