smart apostrophes?

A student in my lab needs to know the criteria to put into the find and
replace box for replacing straight apostrophes to smart apostrophes. Does
anyone out there know what a smart apostrophe is?

On the AutoFormat As You Type tab of Tools | AutoCorrect Options, check the
box for "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes" and then type ' in both the
"Find what" and "Replace with" boxes of the Replace dialog. The
AutoCorrection will be performed when the replacement is made.
Alternatively, if this option is selected on the AutoFormat (not AutoFormat
As You Type) tab, you can manually run Format | AutoFormat to make the
substitution.

The best way to convert them is to run autocorrect with the smart quotes
option set, however replace ' with ^0146 (though this will find all single
quotes.)
