"smart quotes" are reversed

I'm using Find and Replace to try and correct the curly quotes in a very long
Word document, but they all come out reversed: Word puts closing quotes
BEFORE the word in each case, and opening quotes AFTER the word. I've tried
switching "smart quotes" off, then Find and Replace to change curly quotes to
straight, and then back again, but finally they still all come out reversed.

Try putting them all back as straight quotes and then use AutoFormat to see
if it changes the quotes correctly. (Note that you need the option turned on
under AutoFormat options.)

I have tried several times with Find &Replace to switch them to straight
quotes and back again, switching the Autoformat off then on again. First
couple of times it got me nowhere, & all the quotes stayed reversed. Now
I've got to the point where all the quotes (I'm talking, by the way, about
single quotes (and apostrophes) are closing quotes (so now the closing quotes
and all the apostrophes are correct) but I still can't get the opening curly
quotes to "Replace" properly. (They are correct when I TYPE them in, but
there are a lot of them and I don't want to have to retype them all). I've
never had this trouble before - could it be a new glitch in Office 2003?

I don't think so. I've not seen it reported before on here and I support
many heavy users of Word 2003 and not had any reports either. Is that
happening on just a single (long) document or are you experiencing this with
many documents? Does it work OK typing in real-time (i.e. you have
straightquotes with smartquotes as you type enabled)?
