Smart quotes gives initial quote at bottom of line

In Word 2003, I'm working in US English, and In Autoformat, when I choose to
replace straight quotes with smart quotes, the initial quotation mark is
placed on the bottom rather than the top of the line as it should be, like
some European language quotations. I have checked and my regional and
language settings are correct, tho I have Croatian as an possibility - it's
not enabled.

What keyboard is enabled? Right-click the EN in the language bar and choose
Settings. In the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box, click the
Settings tab. Under English (United States), scroll down to the Keyboard
section, and see what keyboard is installed. If it's not US, then that could
be the problem.

thanks for your answer. I have already checked this, and yes, the US keyboard
is installed! It seems like a glitch. I'm now trying to ienable the
US-international to see if that helps.

Have you found a solution yet as I am having the same problem. At the end of
quoted section I get an open quote mark?

No, I haven't found a solution yet. I'm going to send the file to another
computer and see what happens. I've tried futzing with find and replace, and
all I've succeeded in doing is messing up the ending quote too - now the
closing quotes look like opening quotes! And when I type a quote, nothing
happens at first, and then if I type another character or word, the quote
shows up. it's a drag!
