smart quotes not so smart

Word 2000

If, with SmartQuotes on, you type (after a blank space) a double quote followed
by a single quote, or a single quote followed by a double quote, the first
character is a proper left-hand quote mark, but the second one is a right-hand
quote mark. Any simple workarounds? I can't even get AutoCorrect to fix this.

Thanks.

The only workaround I know of is to insert the proper character explicitly
rather than depend on Smart Quotes:

Left single quote: Ctrl+`, `
Right single quote: Ctrl+', '
Left double quote: Ctrl+`, "
Right double quote: Ctrl+', "
