smart tags - how do you make them go away?

I have removed and disabled 'smart' tags in my documents repeatedly, but
they keep coming back. I've even tried it in normal.dot. How can I
kill these things completely?

Is there a way to uninstall the bit of the software that does this?

Turn off all references to Smart Tags:
Auto Correct Options... > Smart Tags tab > remove check marks from
LABEL TEXT WITH SMART TAGS and SHOW SMART TAG ACTIONS BUTTON. Remove
all checks from the box of RECOGNIZERS. Then go to:
TOOLS > OPTIONS > SAVE tab and remove the check mark from EMBED SMART
TAGS.
On the VIEW tab remove the check mark from Smart Tags in the SHOW
section.
Do a FILE > EXIT to exit from Word. Return to each of the above and
verify that the settings have 'stuck'. If not your settings are not
being saved and you may need a new profile. Before giving yourself a
new profile, be sure all the settings are the way you want them and
record a macro to log your settings by going to TOOLS > MACRO > RECORD
NEW MACRO. Name your macro something like MySettings. Go to TOOLS >
OPTIONS and click on each tab (the settings are all recorded in the
macro as you do so), then go to TOOLS > AUTO CORRECT OPTIONS and do the
same. (You can also save your AutoText). I usually end the macro with a
message that pops up and says "Settings Restored" just so I know the
macro has finished. After your Macro is complete you can go back to
TOOLS > MACRO > MACROS and locate your macro and choose EDIT. Copy your
macro into a Word document, name and save it in a safe place. Should
you need to replace our normal.dot you can copy the macro from the Word
document into your new normal so you know the settings will be the
same. If your settings ever get 'messed up' you can run your macro to
restore your settings.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for all this. I missed the tools/option/save one, but had the
rest. Maybe that's what was allowing this to change.

It seemed to me that the settings were being manipulated whenever I
loaded in other people's documents that their authors had allowed to
become infested with these irritating parasites.
