Smileys showing as J

When I type ":)" to get a smiley in an email it comes up as a smiley until
after I send the message. The person receiving the message sees the smiley
but on my machine it shows up as a "J". Anyone have any idea why this is
happening?????

I do not know what causes ":)" to be converted into a smiley; I don't
think this is a native Outlook function.

However, assuming that you use HTML or RTF format, it is possible that
the smiley is rendered as 0x4A with the Wingdings font (which is a
smiley); 0x4A on other fonts renders to "J". It seems that the font
setting gets lost on your sent item.

What mail editor are you using, Word or Outlook's built-in editor? When you
say 'but on my machine it shows up as a "J"', where are you looking; i.e.,
in which folder? You said when you type :) you get a smiley, then you said
on your machine it's not a smiley.
