smpt-setting won't work although identical with those who do work

hello. Here's a really bizarre thing. I have installed the office 2004 suite
on my new mac. Now, there's one account Entourage won't allow to send mail,
even though all settings ­ System Preferences as well as account settings
­ are exactly the same as on the old mac. The Error Description is:
"Entourage cannot find the server. Verify the server information is entered
correctly in the Account Settings, and that your DNS settings in the Network
pane of System Preferences are correct."
I checked over and over again, I even made screenshots and superimposed
them, the settings are absolutely identical. Is there anything besides
Account Settings and DMS settings that need to be regarded?

Well if indeed the network settings are identical, it might be something
else... Is there a chance the Host file was modified with entries for
the IP of the SMTP server for instance (which would bypass the DNS)??

Can you try entering the IP address of the SMTP instead of its name?
Can you use the Network Utility application to ping the SMTP server??
