SMTP authentication error

Hi. I'm having this problem in Mail and Entourage both.

In Mail.app, when I try to send an email (SMTP password authentication
enabled) I get the error:
"The SMTP server "mail.**********.com" rejected the password for
user "****@**********.com"
Please re-enter your password, or cancel." (I put the stars there for
obvious security reasons)

In Entourage, I get:
"SMTP authentication failed. Your account ID or security settings may
be incorrect. Would you like to try re-entering your account
ID/password? Yes/No"

So in both, I tried re-entering the login for both. I checked and
double-checked the settings in both Entourage and Mail. Both can
receive, but neither can send. My boss is also having the same issue
on a different internet connection with Entourage. We have used these
same mail apps and settings for over a year now, and they have always
worked until today. Any ideas? thanks!

I am also having this problem. But I live in Australia, and I only
encounter the problem when I visit the US. It started last July,
happened again during a December trip, and now (March). I presumed it
was Mail and started to use Thunderbird as a backup, but am having some
problems there as well. I get the same error messages that you list.
