smtp authentication

Hughesnet is my isp. They just changed their name from direcway. Now I
can send email using entourage. I get an entourage error message that
says it can't send because it requires smtp authentication. According
to hughesnet I have properly filled out all of the fields but since the
error message is an "entourage error" they can't help me. A friend in
another state using another isp and another pop is having the same
problem using outlook on a pc. Any suggestions???

Can you tell us what error is being produced?

To turn on authentication, go to the Tools menu and select 'Accounts'.
In the listing that is presented, double-click your account to open it for
editing
Click on the button marked 'Click here for advanced sending options'
Check the box for 'SMTP server requires authentication' and the button for
'Use same settings as receiving mail server'

I have used the settings you suggest but they won't work as long as I
use @lauracalfee.com. From what I've been able to discern from their
completely uninteilligible support people, it's a new anti-spam
feature. They want all of their customers to use @hughesnet.com to
advertise their poor company. Surely this is irritating a lot of
people besides me!
From my domain server, I understand that it could be fixed if they'd
give me some code...

Any thoughts???

SMTP does not have to match the POP server info. Don't be upset by this,
it's a safeguard to keep spammers from relaying spam messages. ISPs that do
not safeguard the use of their servers can be blacklisted and then all your
mail will be rejected by other ISPs in order to stop spam enabling.

More info on relaying:

We use Ground Control as our mobile internet provider. (we won't get
into a discussion on which is worse, GC or HughesNet/Data Storm/MotoSat
etc).
I have all my private mail filtered through Spam Arrest and I use their
SMPT for all outgoing mail. This way if we are in an RV park with
faster Wifi connections I don't have to use the slower Data Storm
connections. Convenient .... but SLOW! Mail goes out via the internet
and not a private ISP. This is nice too if we're with family and not
anywhere near the coach/Data Storm dish).
