smtp server can not relay, due to quoted names

It appears to me that outlook is putting single quotes around the entire
recipient name, making it impossible for the smtp server to authenticate the
name. The SMTP server then rejects the sending. This only happens when I am
connected to a business network via VPN.

I have a very wierd work around. I go into my sent items folder, double
click to get the message in a standalone window. Select actions "resend this
message", that gets the message in a new stand alone window. I will use a
specific example here. The name in the To: box shows up as
'(e-mail address removed)'. I right click the recipient name to get the
properties dialog. The display name and the E-mail address show up the same
as (e-mail address removed) with no quotes. I type a space at the end of the
display name and click ok the resend message window is now displayed with ...
(e-mail address removed) (e-mail address removed) ... no quotes and a space
in between the two names. I then repeat the above process, except this time
I delete the space at the end of the display name and when I press ok the
resend message window displays
.... (e-mail address removed) with no quotes, and the send works fine. When
the error occurs, I get a response from my smtp server as follows:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: pool tonite?
Sent: 3/22/2005 10:08 AM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

'(e-mail address removed)' on 3/22/2005 10:08 AM
550 <[email protected]>: Recipient address rejected:
Relaying Denied: Authenticate with POP first or contact (e-mail address removed)
