Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Does anyone have anything informative about Office for MAC 2008 compatibility with Snow Leopard? The basic question is this... will Office for Mac operate under 10.6? A simple yes or no will suffice. Preferably an answer from someone who has either seen the testing results or has done them would be appreciated. Hyperbole about unknowns being unknowable does not help....

Anyone who knows is probably still under non-disclosure.

(Do you really think that Apple and Microsoft would not have tested this
prior to release?)

Hi Austin,

you'll have to wait until the NDA (non-disclosure agreement) is lifted;
until then, no one is allowed to comment on what works and what doesn't.
That being said, I am fairly confident that Office 2008 will work fine under
Mac OS X 10.6. It is too important a software suite for it not to work, and
I assume Microsoft have been testing the new OS extensively. As John McGhie
has already mentioned in another post, some more obscure features might not
work, but only time will tell. If you absolutely depend on Office (or any
other application) to get your job done, it might be better to hold off for
a few weeks until you hear from other users that it is okay to upgrade.

I continue to be amazed at how mickey mouse MS treats the Mac community. I have been able to confirm Snow Leopard compatibility with every other major piece of software that I use over the past couple of weeks. The ONLY one I've run into the NDA excuse is Microsoft.

What a mess....

.... Or perhaps it's the only source you've contacted that isn't violating
the NDA... Or perhaps others are just telling you what you want to hear...
Or perhaps the others don't really know & just want to sound
"authoritative"... Or perhaps MS has learned from previous experience that
Apple is well known for making eleventh hour changes that can adversely
affect software performance in unpredictable ways... ad infinitum.

I sincerely do not understand the "give me what I want or you're evil"
mentality.

In any event, Snow Leopard seems to be more like a "Service Pack" with
only small changes (which many appear to be copying what's been in
Windows for a while). Hence the "small" price.

It would probably be a wise thing to make sure your version of Office is updated to the latest and greatest patch before upgrading to Snow Leopard.

Hi Scott:

Yes, that is essential.

I have tested Office 2008 and Office 2004 on the retail version of Snow
Leopard.

With Service Release 2 (Office 12.2.0) Microsoft released more fixes for the
Spaces issues in Word 2008. Those fixes depend on Apple changes that are
included with Snow Leopard. So Word 2008 behaves "better" in Snow Leopard
than it does in OS 10.5.8.

Other than that, while I am still testing, the Microsoft Office 2004 and
2008 applications have so far not revealed any issues in Snow Leopard.

Cheers

OK, this is going much faster than I had hoped...

You are reading this from Snow Leopard on the main Work system.

I have tested Word 2004 and Word 2008, and three flavours of Windows in
Parallels. That's my minimum working set, and I have found no issues with
any of them.

Parallels is happy, ClamX is happy, my RAID-5 array is happy, the network is
working, the firewall is happy, Growl is happy, Skype and Adium are happy.
Even the Logitech video camera works... As does its microphone.

FontBook revealed about a dozen duplicate fonts: I disabled and removed the
old versions.

Before the upgrade, I used OnyX to run all the system maintenance scripts,
and to delete all of the font and system caches. When OnyX completed, I
restarted the system and went straight into the install without allowing any
applications to start and re-load the caches.

Playing happily...

Hi John,

Does anyone know why, when I installed Snow Leopard, the majority of my Word
2004 documents (doc and rtf) were changed to TextEdit docs and now open
direct into TextEdit???

Cheers

Most likely there was a flaw in the file system before upgrading so the
program association was erroneously registered. Do a Get Info on one of the
files & reset the Opens With, then check the Change All box. You'll probably
have to do that for one of the RTFs as well as one of the DOCs.

Hi Bill:

Yes :) That's why I recommended using OnyX to clean up the old system
before upgrading it :)

As Bob says, it's a simple fix...
