so far, this is worthless!

I just activated the one note program. I went through the tutorial, but have
not a clue as to how toget started. My dragon program will not operate to
convert speech to text, and I cannot type in anything. I do not have a
tablet PC, only a laptop. So far, I cannot find any use for this program.

I was hoping that my students could utilize this for notetaking but the help
menu is of no help at all.

Exactly how does one use this program?

Best resource for overall use of OneNote is the demo here:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011423061033.aspx Incredible
stuff revealed. As for your usage problems, I would suggest you uninstall
from within Add or Remove Programs, restart your machine, and then make sure
you've got not other programs running in the background, especially anti
virus programs such as anything Norton/Symantec or McAfee. Just exiting
those programs from the Systray icon will not stop them from running hidden,
underneath everything.

It sounds like you have some setup issues, especially if you can't
enter text from the keyboard. Try to articulate more exactly the
problems you are having. Then use the support available to you online
(here and from Microsoft) and by phone, and possibly from your
institution, to resolve the issues. "Exactly how does one use this
program?" is way too broad a question to get any specific help.

You don't need a tablet PC to use OneNote. I use it on my desktop PC to
support research, article drafts, keeping track of queries and
projects, and in my editorial work. If you'll look at the discussions
here, you will find that lots of people find OneNote if not
indispensible, at least an important tool in their efforts to organize
their lives.

OneNote is not a word processor or a substitute for other "Office"
applications. It's intended, I think, as the name implies, for use as a
notebook.

On Dragon, I also use speech-to-text but I have to confess that I
haven't used it with OneNote. Mainly I use Dragon to transcribe
dictation from my Olympus DVR and Palm Zire, and sometimes to dictate
directly into Word. But if I get a minute later today, I'm going to see
if I can get it to work with OneNote and I'll let you know how it goes.

I hope you'll be patient with the learning curve for OneNote. Many of
us have found the effort to have been worthwhile.

I just used Dragon Naturally Speaking (Preferred) in OneNote, and it's
working flawlessly. Try what Chris H. has suggested, and let us know
how you fare.

If you activated then you should be able to type. If you click the mouse
somewhere on a page and try to type what happens?

I use my Talkingdesktop program doing speech to text and text-to-speech
talking back without any problems in onenote on my laptop.
You must have an option set to off or not turned on properly.
