Software upgrade

Although I've been using computers for many years in
business I've never owned my own computer and last month,
when I retired, bought one from Dell which came with XP
Home Edition. This came with Works 7.0.

I cannot get on with Works and want to upgrade to an
Office suite which has Word, Excel & Powerpoint (things I
was used to in the office). I note there are various
options such as Office Suite 2003 and even Office XP. I
want a software package that won't cost me a fortune but
will last me for a few years (now that I'm retired I
can't afford to keep spending). I cannot get anyone to
advise me. Can anyone help please?

Office has several editions with different included applications. A good
place to start is here:

When you choose an edition, an upgrade version is the lowest cost. Office
2003, the latest version, allows an upgrade from Works 7. Office XP, the
prior version, does not.
