Solid border

In Word 6 and Word 7, my tables had no borders. After creating a table in
Word 2000 or later, why is there a solid border around each cell?

Press Ctrl+Alt+U to remove the borders, it that is what they are. Possibly
they are only the non-printing gridlines the display of which can be turned
off by selecting the appropriate item on the Tables menu.
