Solution - Visio Locks When Opening or Creating Database Model

J

Jeff A. Stucker

(It took several weeks and the cooperation of a very helpful tech
support person at Microsoft to figure out this one.)

PROBLEM
For both Visio 2000 and Visio 2002, whenever I opened or created a
Visio database model diagram, Visio would lock up either just before
(Visio 2002) or after (Visio 2000) the model displayed.

ANALYSIS
Using the shareware tool RegMon to monitor registry activity, I
discovered that the lockup happened just after enumerating Printer
entries in the registry. My default printer is an Epson Stylus C82.

WORKAROUND
Setting the default printer to Generic / Text Only before opening or
creating a database model fixes the problem. The document prints just
fine to any printer, including the Epson Stylus C82.

SOLUTION TBD
I will post back here if I find a better solution.

Does anyone have a better solution? Here is what Microsoft Technical
Support says:

With Visio 2000 you have found the least "cludgy" method for remedying
this problem. Visio uses that Default printer for ALL of it's
processes. So when Visio loads or you move a shape or perform an
action all the code gets run through that default printer driver.

I have the following thoughts:
A. Set the default printer to one that works and leave it. From
all of your host applications choose you're desired printer from the
print time drop down printer list. This is not eloquent but it will
allow you to proceed without changing the default printer.
B. Proceed as you suggest with the default printer being changed
each time.
C. This is the last option as it requires spending money. Upgrade
to Visio 2002 Professional. Visio 2002 uses an internally created
printer to release the product from the grip of the system default
printer and allow you to use whatever printer you want. Information on
upgrade pricing can be found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/visio/howtobuy/default.asp

---end quote---

The last bit about Visio 2002 doesn't help since that's the version
I'm using [Visio 2002 for Enterprise Architects (10.0.2705)].

If there is ANY additional help out there, I would appreciate a
solution that doesn't have me re-selecting printers all the time.

Thanks,
